The paradox of freedom on Juneteenth

  • Covenant Living of Keene (map)

The Celebration of Juneteenth is rich with paradox. According to the Declaration, all men are born equal and free. According to the Emancipation Proclamation, the enslaved people of certain rebel states were released, much as property was confiscated from criminals. While the outcome in both cases was freedom, the paths are very different.

This presentation considers the two paths to freedom - one afforded to each one of us by our very nature and the other granted by the Federal Government. We'll consider the reasoning of the Emancipation Proclamation and the faith required in the Declaration. What might we all learn about our current political paradoxes from these two paths?
